Anthropic Opens Talks With Samsung to Build Its First Custom AI Chip

Anthropic has opened early talks with Samsung Electronics about manufacturing a custom AI chip on Samsung's 2 nanometer process, following OpenAI's Broadcom-built Jalapeño chip into the industry's rush toward custom silicon. The effort is still in its earliest stage, but the hire of an OpenAI chip architect signals real ambition behind it.

Anthropic is talking to Samsung about a custom AI chip, and the useful part of the story is not the chip itself. It is the admission that every serious AI lab now wants a hedge against Nvidia.

Anthropic has opened early talks with Samsung Electronics about building its own AI chip on Samsung's 2 nanometer manufacturing process, according to The Information. Nothing here is finished. There is no public prototype, no final specification, and no manufacturing date you can put on a calendar. Anthropic has not said whether the chip would be tuned mainly for training Claude, running Claude for customers, or some narrower workload inside its own data centers.

That makes this less like a product announcement and more like a warning flare. You don't start talking to Samsung's foundry business unless you think compute is going to decide how much of your company you actually control.

Look at who Anthropic has brought in. The Information reported that Clive Chan, who worked on OpenAI's custom silicon effort, has joined Anthropic's hardware team. That is not the hire you make for a vague research experiment. Custom AI chips are slow, expensive, and unforgiving. If the architecture is wrong, the mistake does not sit in a slide deck. It comes back as silicon you cannot use properly.

OpenAI just gave everyone the example. On June 24, OpenAI and Broadcom unveiled Jalapeño, OpenAI's first custom inference processor. The Verge reported that the chip is built for inference, the work of running models for users, rather than training them from scratch. Tom's Hardware reported that OpenAI and Broadcom moved the design to tape-out in nine months, an unusually fast cycle for an advanced ASIC. OpenAI expects deployment by the end of 2026.

Anthropic is not copying every detail. It is copying the conclusion. If you run a frontier model and millions of users are asking it questions all day, you eventually want hardware shaped around your own workloads rather than whatever Nvidia can sell you, whenever it can sell it, at whatever margin the market will bear.

None of this means Anthropic can walk away from the chips it already uses. It cannot. The company still depends on Nvidia GPUs, Google's tensor processing units, and Amazon's Trainium chips to scale Claude. CNBC reported in October 2025 that Google had committed up to $40 billion in cash and TPU capacity to Anthropic, with access to as many as one million TPUs. In April 2026, Amazon followed with a larger infrastructure commitment tied to Trainium and AWS. Those deals are not side notes. They are the engine room.

A Samsung chip would sit beside that stack, not above it. That distinction matters because custom silicon is not a magic escape hatch. It only pays when the customer has enough volume, enough software control, and enough patience to absorb years of engineering work before the savings show up. Most startups should not even pretend this is an option. Anthropic can talk about it because Claude is already operating at the scale where a few percentage points of performance per watt can turn into real money.

Samsung has its own reason to want the deal. Its foundry business trails TSMC in the most advanced manufacturing nodes, and AI has become the market where a single named customer can change the story. A 2 nanometer AI chip for Anthropic would give Samsung the kind of reference customer it badly needs, especially as Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft keep pulling more semiconductor demand toward custom designs.

Here is the thing: the labs do not distrust Nvidia's chips. They distrust having one supplier sit between them and growth. Nvidia's GPUs remain the standard because they work, the software ecosystem is deep, and customers can deploy them now. But that power is exactly why OpenAI built Jalapeño with Broadcom, why Google has spent years on TPUs, why Amazon keeps pushing Trainium, and why Anthropic is now talking to Samsung.

For you, the useful signal is not that Anthropic suddenly becomes a chip company. It does not. The signal is that compute has moved from procurement problem to strategic control problem. When the input everyone needs most is scarce and expensive, the richest players stop treating it like a vendor relationship and start treating it like infrastructure they need to own.

Frankly, this will not dent Nvidia's revenue this year. It probably will not dent it next year either. Anthropic has no public timeline for the Samsung chip, and even a successful first design would take time to qualify, manufacture, package, deploy, and connect into working clusters. Nvidia will keep selling into a market that still cannot get enough accelerators.

But the direction is set. OpenAI has Broadcom. Anthropic is testing Samsung. Google and Amazon already have their own chips in the field. Nvidia is still the company everyone needs today, but the biggest AI labs are spending serious money so they need it a little less tomorrow.
