To Help Save The Jobs Affected By Automation Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Pledges $5 Million to Andrew Yang’s Humanity Forward

Twitter and Square CEO Jack Dorsey is donating $5 million to Andrew Yang’s Humanity Forward nonprofit, the former presidential candidate announced on Thursday, to provide 20,000 microgrants of $250 through the nonprofit’s direct cash assistance program.

“Not only will Jack’s donation directly impact tens of thousands of people in need during the current economic downturn, it will help Humanity Forward and our movement continue to make a case for Universal Basic Income (UBI) in the United States,” Yang said in a statement. The announcement came during a conversation on the Yang Speaks podcast.

The money will be administered through Humanity Forward’s Coronavirus Relief Fund, which, while it doesn’t target areas specifically based on coronavirus cases, provides one-time cash payments to low-income workers most likely to be affected by the virus’s impact on the economy.

Yang launched Humanity Forward in March after ending his run for the presidency to focus on policies for a more “human-centered America.” In addition to activating new voters, the organization aimed to provide resources to political candidates who support a universal basic income (UBI), an idea that was the centerpiece of Yang’s campaign platform. The campaign envisioned a “Freedom Dividend” of $1,000 paid monthly to working-age Americans and funded by a sales tax.

Dorsey’s donation comes via his Start Small fund, which he launched by donating $1 billion of his equity in Square. The fund is initially targeted at relief from the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Once the pandemic has abated, Dorsey said he also plans to fund education for girls and UBI through Start Small. The organization logs donations in a publicly available spreadsheet.

Dorsey, who donated to Yang’s primary campaign, appeared on Yang’s podcast to announce the donation, telling listeners that UBI would grow more important as more industries turn to automation. “UBI to me represents a floor,” Dorsey said on the podcast. “A floor that people can stand on, and have the knowledge and peace of mind that they could survive and eat and feed their children while they are learning how to transition into this new world.”

Former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s Startup Lumi Labs Raises $20 Million

Lumi Labs is a tech incubator founded by Marissa Mayer and Enrique Muñoz Torres, based in downtown Palo Alto. It focuses on the consumer media and artificial intelligence space.

“Thinking about what’s next, I returned to my roots, rented the original Google office where I started my career, and founded a lab with my longtime friend and teammate @eamunozt. A bit of info: http://www.lumilabs.com” said Marissa Mayer in a tweet.

Mayer and Torres are launching Lumi Labs at 165 University Ave., a small office building that’s been home to some of the Internet’s biggest success stories, like Google, PayPal Holdings, Logitech International and Danger.

Mayer joined Google in 1999 as employee number 20, and was pivotal in the company’s development of AdWords — now a multibillion-dollar business. She left the search giant in 2012 to lead Yahoo as its eighth and final CEO.

Lumi Labs, a consumer app incubator co-founded by former Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, has raised $20 million in venture capital funding, according to an SEC filing.

The intrigue: Lumi is based at 165 University Ave. in Palo Alto, where Google was headquartered in 1999 when Mayer became one of its earliest employees. She declined to comment when contacted by Axios.

More than 75% of the industry’s revenues are sourced from exports to large markets like North America and Europe. The spread of coronavirus in these two markets will create ripple effects in the Indian IT industry.

India’s startup ecosystem is also facing high loss. Many are making pay cuts for their employees. The $10-20-50 million startups have to do cost-cutting and the main cost-cutting is people.

A request has been made to the government by a number of startup founders and venture capitalists to grant them a “robust relief package” which will help them to combat the severe impact that their business may face due to COVID-19.

Mandatory leave without pay or layoffs have been sanctioned by many prominent media houses.

Two of the leading newspapers, The Indian Express and Business Standard newspapers have also announced pay cuts. The Quint has also asked about 45 employees to go on leave without pay.

More than 20 lakh jobs are at risk in India’s aviation sector. Travel restrictions are affecting the hospitality sector as well. The Indian hospitality and tourism industry might face the job loss of around 38 million

The export sector has also been paralyzed. India’s merchandise exports have seen a record shrunken by 34.6%.
