Axalta to Take Waterborne Wood Coatings to the Next Level with Cerulean™

Axalta's new Cerulean waterborne wood coatings promise solvent-level quality without the environmental toll, targeting cabinet and furniture manufacturers under growing regulatory pressure.

The coatings industry has long operated on a familiar trade-off. Manufacturers could choose the rich, durable finish of solvent-based products, or they could opt for the lower environmental impact of waterborne alternatives. Each path required giving something up. Axalta Building Products believes it has found a way to collapse that compromise entirely with the launch of Cerulean, its newest generation of waterborne industrial wood coatings.

Unveiled as the successor to the company's Zenith line, Cerulean is designed to deliver what many in the industry have considered contradictory: the luxurious feel and performance of solvent-based coatings alongside a significantly reduced environmental footprint. For distributors and OEMs navigating tightening regulations around volatile organic compounds, the proposition addresses a tension that has shaped purchasing decisions for years.

The technical details back up the ambition. Cerulean coatings emit less than 200 grams per liter of VOCs, placing them in Axalta's lowest emissions category. Every product in the range meets or exceeds KCMA standards, the benchmark for cabinet and furniture construction quality. They arrive ready to spray, with flow and leveling properties that reduce the learning curve for shops transitioning away from solvent-based systems. Standard application equipment works without modification, and the coatings integrate with Axalta's proprietary X-pert color dispensing platform for consistent, computerized mixing accuracy.

The initial product lineup covers the core needs of most wood finishing operations. The Premium Waterborne Topcoat is available in six sheen levels, from dead flat through gloss. A Premium Pigmented Waterborne line offers the same range of finishes for opaque applications. Rounding out the range are neutral and white undercoats designed to provide a reliable foundation beneath topcoats.

Axalta is introducing Cerulean at the International Woodworking Fair in Atlanta, running August 6 through 9. The trade show timing is deliberate, placing the product directly in front of the audience most likely to adopt it: manufacturers and distributors serving the kitchen cabinet, bathroom vanity, and furniture segments. The coatings also suit architectural millwork and retail store fixtures, broadening the addressable market beyond residential applications.

Wade Arnold, Vice President and General Manager of Axalta Building Products, frames the launch as a turning point for the category. "The decision between solvent-based and waterborne coatings for wood has previously been conceived as a trade-off: the most premium finish versus the better safety and environmental profile," he said. "With Cerulean, we are showing the industry that they no longer have to choose."

Arnold also emphasized the depth of investment behind the product. The technology emerged from a multi-year development cycle that began after Zenith's debut, reflecting a sustained R&D commitment rather than an incremental update. The goal was to offer customers tangible benefits on both fronts simultaneously: measurable progress toward sustainability targets and a finish that holds its own against conventional solvent-based competitors.

For manufacturers weighing the switch, the question has always been whether waterborne technology could match the tactile quality that buyers expect from premium cabinetry and furniture. If Cerulean delivers on Axalta's claims, the answer may finally be shifting from "not yet" to "why not." The product arrives at a moment when environmental regulations are tightening across multiple jurisdictions and consumer expectations for sustainable manufacturing continue to rise. Companies that can meet both standards without sacrificing output quality stand to gain real competitive ground.
