Many have been stunned with Melania Trump’s latest exclusive Fox News interview, as it appears to be a subtle move to throw her weight behind the policies of Vice President Kamala Harris, at least on women’s rights and reproductive health. During the interview, Melania gave her comments about abortion: a woman had to have a choice about her body.
Her acknowledgment of women’s autonomy further comes close to Harris’s stance, which has championed reproductive rights as being part and parcel of equality for women. Coming from a former First Lady, Melania’s views have some weight, and her candor in talking about such sensitive issues has fired up the debate on both sides of the aisle.
Speaking about women’s issues in today’s society, she made a point of mentioning that the empowerment of women does and should transcend political affiliations. It perhaps could interlink with Harris’ policies, such as access to improved healthcare and protection of reproductive rights.
To some, Melania’s comments signal not an alliance but, rather, her own opinion, and the result, nonetheless, is reasonably significant. If she continues speaking out in favor of policies supported by Harris, then that might just be a turning point in how past first ladies approach pressing social issues through demands for discussion and bipartisanship.
