Traditional website blockers are binary. Block YouTube and you block the coding tutorial you needed for work. AccountyCat takes a different approach - it uses AI to understand what you are actually doing.
The problem with every focus app on the market is the same: they treat all websites the same. A URL is either blocked or it is not. That works fine for the obvious time sinks, but it falls apart the moment your actual research lives on the same sites as your distractions. For a developer jumping between Stack Overflow, GitHub, and YouTube tutorials, a hard block is worse than no block at all.
Jonas Strabel, a solo developer building AccountyCat as a self-funded open-source side project, ran into this problem himself. The existing tools forced a choice between productivity and access that did not reflect how knowledge workers actually operate. So he built a different kind of accountability companion.
Context-Aware Focus
AccountyCat uses AI to read on-screen context in real time. When you drift onto YouTube, it does not automatically assume you are procrastinating. It looks at what you are watching, what app you were using before, and what your overall session looks like to decide whether this is legitimate research or a rabbit hole. If you are following a tutorial for a project you are actively building, AccountyCat stays quiet. If you are five videos deep on a topic unrelated to anything you are working on, it intervenes.
The approach is designed for developers, creators, and remote workers who need a guardrail rather than a hard lock. People whose jobs demand browsing as part of the process, but who also know how easily browsing becomes distraction.
Custom Accountability Characters
A recent update introduced full custom characters. Users can now build their own accountability companions - an AI version of Steve Jobs questioning your screen time choices, a Drill Sergeant, or even your own mother popping up to ask what you are doing. It turns the accountability loop from a passive metric into something more immediate and human.
AccountyCat is available now at accountycat.com. It is a privacy-first tool that processes everything on-device - no accounts, no cloud, no data leaving your machine.
