BrainCo's Bionic Hands Are Selling to Robot Makers, Not Just Amputees

China's BrainCo built its bionic hands for amputees, but robot makers are now giving the company a second, faster-moving market. That changes what the business is really becoming.

Bloomberg reported on June 2 that BrainCo, the Hangzhou brain-computer interface company, is seeing a sales surge for its dexterous robotic hands as humanoid robot makers look for something better than a claw. Several dozen mainland firms, including Unitree Robotics and Leju Robotics, are buying BrainCo's five-fingered hands for their machines. The company built these products for prosthetics. Now they're becoming robot parts.

Robot makers found the prosthetic hand

That's the useful part. BrainCo's Revo 2 hand is no longer just a medical device story. The company's own documentation lists Basic, Pro and Touch versions, with 11 degrees of freedom, six active joints, a 383 gram weight, a 50 newton whole-hand grip force and support for robot development stacks including Linux, Windows and ROS. The Touch version adds tactile sensing for pressure, friction, direction and proximity. Those aren't brochure details. They're exactly the specs a robotics lab checks before bolting a hand onto a humanoid platform.

Unitree's G1-D is already showing how quickly that shift can happen. A current US dealer listing for the platform names BrainCo's Revo 2 as a five-finger dexterous hand option, with 0.1 degree repeatability and tactile versions available. BrainCo's GitHub ecosystem also includes Revo Hand integration guides for Unitree G1 robots. You don't need to oversell the point. The product has moved from rehabilitation clinics into robot integration manuals.

Founder and CEO Bicheng Han started BrainCo in 2015 while pursuing a PhD at Harvard's Center for Brain Science, according to his World Economic Forum biography. The original pitch was different: non-invasive brain-computer interface technology that could turn muscle and nerve signals into prosthetic movement without surgery. Chinese media reports have said BrainCo's bionic hand received US FDA approval in 2022, and the company's China pricing has been reported at packages starting around 50,000 yuan. Western myoelectric hands can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Same problem, different cost base.

The funding tells you where this is heading

Money followed before the robot boom was fully visible. CB Insights lists BrainCo's January 2026 financing at about $272 million, with IDG Capital, Walden International and other investors in the round, and a valuation range topping out around $1.3 billion. That is serious capital for a company whose public identity was still tied to prosthetics, neural wearables and rehabilitation. It also explains why BrainCo can treat dexterous hands as a platform instead of a single medical product.

Beijing has its own reasons to want this to work. South China Morning Post described BrainCo as one of Hangzhou's so-called six little dragons, the local cluster that also includes DeepSeek and Unitree. China has also been pushing brain-computer interface development through government planning, with targets for breakthroughs by 2027. When a company sits at the crossing point of BCI, robotics and domestic hardware supply, it gets attention. It should.

Neuralink makes the contrast obvious. Elon Musk's company is taking the invasive route, putting an implant beneath the skull. Bloomberg reported in 2025 that Neuralink raised $650 million in a Series E round, while Semafor reported a $600 million deal valuing it at about $9 billion before the new cash. BrainCo's bet is less dramatic and more commercially boring: sensors worn outside the body and hardware that can be manufactured and sold to robot makers. Frankly, boring may scale better here. Surgery is still surgery.

At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, BrainCo showed the other side of that bet. South China Morning Post reported that the company unveiled a brain-controlled robot platform using an EEG headset to translate neural signals into robotic actions. BrainCo's own release said a person wearing the headset thought about grabbing a cup and watched a robotic arm do it, with the system completing the loop in under 200 milliseconds. No scalpel involved.

That demo matters because it connects the two businesses. A prosthetic hand learns from the human body. A humanoid robot needs the same kind of manipulation, but at industrial scale. BrainCo is now selling hardware for both sides of that line, and its brain-to-robot platform suggests it wants the control layer too.

The humanoid robotics market is still small. CNBC has cited Barclays research putting it at roughly $2 billion to $3 billion today, with a possible path to $200 billion by 2035. That's a long runway. SoftBank's Masayoshi Son told CNBC he sees physical AI and robotics as the next trillion-dollar opportunity. If that forecast is even partly right, BrainCo is well placed. The company that sells hands to Unitree and Leju today has a bigger business ahead than the one it first built for amputees.
