Samsung launches a CEO-led robotics unit and hires Lee Dong-kun from Hyundai

Samsung Electronics has created a CEO-led robotics division called RX and hired Lee Dong-kun, the former Hyundai Motor Group executive who ran robotics strategy for Boston Dynamics, to lead its strategy team. The move sent Samsung shares up as much as 7.6% and signals a serious push into humanoid robotics against Hyundai and Tesla.

Samsung Electronics has moved robotics closer to the CEO's desk, and the Lee Dong-kun hire tells you exactly what kind of race it thinks it has entered.

Samsung did not announce a side project on Tuesday. It put robotics strategy and core technology into a single Robotics eXperience Business Office, or RX, and gave it responsibility for commercialization too, reporting directly to device chief TM Roh. Then it put Lee Dong-kun, a Hyundai Motor Group veteran who worked on robotics strategy after Hyundai bought Boston Dynamics, in charge of the strategy team.

That's the real signal. Samsung has talked about robots before, and it has already shown home robots and wearable robots, plus Ballie, the rolling AI companion it has been teasing since CES 2020. RX is different because it gives the work a home, a boss and a route into products. For a company that sells phones, TVs, appliances, chips and sensors, robotics only matters if it can cross those walls.

According to Samsung's July 21 announcement, RX will cover mid to long term robotics strategy and core technologies, plus the commercialization work that had been split across different parts of the company. The company also named its Seoul R&D Campus in Umyeon-dong as the main robotics hub and said it would build overseas R&D bases in the United States, China and Japan. That is not how you organize a publicity trial. It is how you start turning scattered research into an operating business.

Two academic hires tell the same story in quieter language. Samsung said Seoul National University professor Kim Hyun-jin and Ajou University professor Kim Eui-kyum are joining the robotics team, with Kim Eui-kyum's work focused on robot hands and manipulation. If Samsung wants machines that can do useful work outside a demo video, hands matter. Grip is where the promise of humanoid robotics often turns into spilled parts and awkward pauses.

Samsung is late, and it knows it

Look at the company Samsung is pulling talent from. Hyundai Motor Group bought a controlling stake in Boston Dynamics from SoftBank in a deal announced in 2020, then moved this year to buy SoftBank's remaining stake. Boston Dynamics has already spent years putting robots in public view, from Spot to the electric Atlas platform now being prepared for factory work. Samsung is not arriving first.

Hyundai used CES 2026 to show where it wants this to go. The company presented Atlas as a production humanoid robot and said it could handle a 50 kilogram payload with 56 degrees of freedom, figures that put the machine closer to industrial equipment than a stage prop. Hyundai has also tied robotics to its US manufacturing plans, including capacity for robot production in Georgia. You do not need to believe every humanoid robot forecast to understand the pressure on Samsung. A rival Korean conglomerate has a famous robotics company in its pocket.

Lee's appointment therefore reads less like a routine executive hire and more like Samsung reaching into the most relevant nearby playbook. He does not make Samsung a robotics leader by himself. No one does. But he gives RX someone who has seen how Hyundai organized strategy around Boston Dynamics, and that experience is worth more than another slide about physical AI.

Samsung is using that phrase too. Physical AI means machines that combine sensors and actuators with models that let them act in the real world, not just generate text on a screen. The phrase can get vague quickly, so stick to the useful version: Samsung already makes many of the parts that robots need. Cameras, memory, processors, displays, batteries, appliances, factory automation, you name it. A serious robotics unit gives those pieces a target.

The chip angle is not incidental. Samsung's memory business has been pulled deeper into the AI boom, with the company pushing high bandwidth memory for data centers while rivals fight for the same customers. Reuters and other outlets have reported this year on Samsung's effort to qualify its advanced HBM products with major AI chip buyers. Robotics gives Samsung a second lane for AI hardware, one closer to its consumer electronics business and its own manufacturing floors.

The budget is still the missing number

RX arrived with structure and people already in place, and a geography to match. It did not arrive with a dedicated investment figure. Earlier this month, Yonhap reported that Roh told a public event in Jinju that Samsung planned to invest about 60 trillion won in the Yeongnam region, including the Gumi site. That regional spending matters, but it is not the same thing as saying RX has a robotics budget of that size.

That distinction matters for you as a reader because robotics has a habit of making companies sound further along than they are. A unit name is not a product. A professor joining the team is not a factory deployment. A CEO reporting line is not revenue. Samsung has made the correct organizational move, but the hard test comes when RX has to ship machines people can actually buy and put to work.

The company has one advantage most robotics startups would envy: it does not need to invent a customer base from scratch. Samsung can test robots in factories, appliances, homes and logistics settings inside its own empire before asking anyone else to trust them. That is useful. Frankly, it is the only reason this move deserves attention beyond the executive shuffle.

For now, RX should be read as Samsung admitting that robotics cannot sit as a loose collection of experiments anymore. Hyundai has Boston Dynamics. Tesla has Optimus. Samsung now has a CEO-linked robotics office with overseas labs, and a Hyundai veteran running strategy. The next proof will not come from another title. It will come from a machine that works when nobody from marketing is standing beside it.
