The race to become the default operating layer for autonomous AI workflows is entering a sharper phase, and Google is not waiting to be lapped. Over the past several months, the company has pushed hard on its Gemini model family as the backbone for agentic deployments, building out the Agent Development Kit, deepening integrations across Google Workspace and Cloud, and making clear through both Sundar Pichai and DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis that agentic AI is the company's central strategic bet for 2026 and beyond.

The urgency is not hard to explain. Anthropic has quietly become the preferred foundation for developers building serious agentic pipelines. Claude's reputation for instruction-following, reliability under complex multi-step tasks, and safety-conscious design has resonated strongly with the enterprise buyers who matter most in this race. Tools like Claude Code and expanded API tooling have lowered the barrier for developers to deploy Claude not just as a chat interface but as an autonomous participant in real business workflows. When enterprise procurement teams are evaluating which AI platform to standardize on, Anthropic keeps appearing on the shortlist in ways that would have seemed improbable two years ago.

What makes agentic AI strategically different from earlier AI product cycles is the stickiness it creates. A company that builds its internal operations around a specific agent stack, with particular memory systems, orchestration tools, and external service integrations, faces genuine switching costs down the road. This is not the same as choosing a chatbot. It is closer to choosing a cloud provider or an ERP system. The winner of the agentic platform race may hold that position for a decade, which is exactly why Google's investment posture looks less like opportunism and more like a company that understands the window for establishing primacy is limited.

Google's structural advantages in this fight are real. Its existing enterprise relationships through Workspace and Cloud give it direct distribution into the organizations most likely to run large-scale agentic deployments. Its search and data infrastructure offers capabilities that pure-play AI labs cannot replicate easily. And DeepMind's research depth means Google can sustain a long game in a way that a venture-backed competitor cannot, regardless of how well-capitalized Anthropic has become through its rounds backed in part by Google and Amazon themselves.

Microsoft's position complicates the picture further. OpenAI's deep integration into Microsoft Copilot has already captured meaningful enterprise territory, forcing Google and Anthropic to accelerate timelines they might otherwise have stretched out. The result is a three-way pressure system: each major player is moving faster because the others are moving fast, and no one can afford to treat 2026 as a planning year rather than an execution year.

What Enterprises Are Actually Deciding

The practical question facing IT leaders and developers right now is not whether agentic AI will matter but which stack to build on. Gemini's integration with existing Google infrastructure is a genuine selling point for organizations already running on Workspace or Google Cloud. But Claude's track record in production agentic environments, combined with Anthropic's focus on safety properties that large enterprises and regulated industries care about, gives it credibility that raw benchmark performance cannot fully substitute for.

The fuller picture of the agentic stack, covering models, orchestration, memory, and tool integrations, is still being written. No single player has locked up the category yet, which means the decisions enterprises make over the next twelve to eighteen months will carry outsized weight. Google's accelerated push suggests it knows the clock is running. Whether its infrastructure advantages can overcome the developer preference Anthropic has cultivated will be one of the defining competitive questions in enterprise technology through the rest of this decade.
