The Linux Foundation operationally launched the x402 Foundation on July 14, 2026, uniting Visa, Mastercard, Coinbase, Stripe and 13 other premier members around one open standard for AI agents to pay for goods and services over HTTP. The protocol, built by Coinbase, has already moved 75 million transactions worth $24 million in a month, averaging 32 cents per payment.
