Isar Aerospace closes €270 million Series D as Europe races to end its dependence on SpaceX

Isar Aerospace closed a €270 million Series D on June 9, 2026, bringing total funding to roughly €870 million. The Munich rocket startup is backed by Island Green Capital and Molten Ventures as it prepares a qualification orbital launch from Norway's Andøya Spaceport, still pending after multiple scrubs.

Isar Aerospace has the money Europe wants it to have. Now it has to do the harder thing and put Spectrum into orbit.

The Series D is not really a story about one Munich rocket startup raising €270 million. That is the cheque. The story is the gap behind it. In 2025, according to launch data cited by Payload and Isar Aerospace, the United States completed more than 180 orbital launch attempts while European launchers managed eight. If you care about satellites for defence, communications, weather, navigation or earth observation, that difference is not an abstraction. It decides who gets to launch, when they launch, and whose queue they have to join.

Isar announced the €270 million round on June 9, 2026, with new backing from Island Green Capital and Molten Ventures and returning support from HV Capital, Lakestar, UVC Partners and KfW Capital. The company says the round brings total funding to roughly €870 million. That makes Isar one of the best-funded private launch companies in Europe, and it puts a large amount of investor patience behind one vehicle: Spectrum, a 28-meter, two-stage rocket built to carry up to 1,000 kg to low Earth orbit.

Orbit is the missing proof.

Founded in 2018 by Daniel Metzler, Josef Fleischmann and Markus Brandl after work at the Technical University of Munich, Isar has moved faster than many European aerospace projects. But rockets don't grade on effort. Spectrum first flew from Andøya Spaceport in northern Norway on March 30, 2025. Isar said the vehicle cleared the pad, flew for about 30 seconds, was terminated and fell into the sea without damaging the launch pad. In a test program, that has value. For a launch business, it is still a failure to reach orbit.

The second flight, named Onward and Upward, has been waiting on the pad in stages. Isar's own mission updates show a January attempt scrubbed over a pressurization valve issue, a March attempt aborted after an unauthorized vessel entered the danger zone and the fuel temperature rose during the delay, an April scrub tied to a leak in a composite overwrapped pressure vessel, and a June 15 scrub after off-nominal behavior in the vehicle's fluid systems. ESA says the qualification mission is supposed to carry five CubeSats and one experiment under its Boost! programme. As of July 26, third-party launch trackers were listing a tentative August 6 date, while Isar's official mission page had not posted a new confirmed window after the June scrub.

Europe is buying launch insurance

You can see why the money arrived anyway. Ariane 5's final mission in July 2023 left Europe without its old heavy-lift workhorse, while Vega-C's problems and Ariane 6's delays made the gap harder to ignore. ESA missions that once would have been European launches ended up riding on SpaceX. That is fine when the politics are quiet and the manifest has room. It is much less fine when governments are trying to build defence and intelligence capacity in a hurry.

That is the real argument for Isar. Not hype. Access.

The company is positioning Spectrum for small and medium satellites that need dedicated orbits rather than a cheap rideshare slot. Its current site at Andøya gives it northern launch access, and the Canada plan has become more concrete since the funding announcement. On July 7, Isar and Maritime Launch Services said they had signed a contract for Isar to develop a dedicated Spectrum launch complex at Spaceport Nova Scotia near Canso, building on a May letter of intent. The companies said first orbital launches from Nova Scotia are targeted for 2028, with the agreement still subject to milestones and infrastructure handovers.

The defence signal has become just as explicit. On July 23, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited Isar's production facility in Ottobrunn. According to Isar's release, Pistorius pointed to Germany's plan to invest €35 billion in space over the next few years, and the company said more than half its inbound requests over the past 12 months had become defence related. You don't need to oversell that. A launch startup that once had to explain why Europe needed another rocket company is now being visited by defence ministers.

The money does not cancel the engineering risk

Frankly, investors are paying ahead of the evidence. Spectrum has not demonstrated stage separation, second-stage ignition, fairing jettison or payload deployment in flight. Those are not details for later. They are the job.

Isar's production claims are large too. The company has said its new facility near Munich is being prepared for future production of up to 40 Spectrum vehicles a year, and in January it said vehicles three through seven were already in production. That is useful if the rocket works. If it doesn't, production scale just gives engineers more hardware to revise.

The competition will not wait politely. SpaceX flew 165 Falcon 9 missions in 2025, according to Payload's launch count, and Falcon 9 rideshare pricing has made life hard for small-launch companies that only compete on cost per kilogram. PLD Space, the Spanish launcher company, closed a €180 million Series C in March 2026, so European capital is not flowing to Isar alone. Rocket Factory Augsburg, HyImpulse and others are trying to prove their own vehicles. Europe wants redundancy, and it should. One launcher is not sovereignty. It is another bottleneck.

For Isar, the next test is wonderfully simple and brutally fair. Raise the money, sign the launch-site contracts, host the ministers, build the factory. All of it helps. None of it reaches orbit. Until Spectrum does that, Europe's best-funded private launch bet is still a promise sitting on a pad.
